The path.

Certification isn't a gate — it's a ladder. Every referee on the crew started at Rookie. Show up, work games, ask questions, and the next level takes care of itself.

Step 1 · Email Keith.
socfnl@hotmail.com — let him know you're interested. He'll send the training link and assign you a shadow night with a senior ref.
/ Onboard
Same week
Step 2 · Work the modules.
Six training modules. Most refs finish in 2–3 evenings. Self-paced, video + reading + quizzes.
/ Train
2 weeks
Step 3 · Shadow nights.
Two Friday nights paired with a senior ref. Watch the mechanics, learn the rhythm, get comfortable with the rotation.
/ Field
2 Fridays
Step 4 · Rookie games.
Get on the schedule for K and 1/2 division games as a Rookie ref. Second whistle until you've got the rhythm down — then lead.
/ Live
Every Friday
Step 5 · Certify up.
After ~6 games at Rookie, take the Certified exam. Two passing on-field evaluations gets you certified and bumps your pay.

Gear & basics.

Keep it simple. The league supplies the field; you supply the kit. Receipts are reimbursable for any first-season ref.

/ Required
Whistle on a lanyard.
A pealess whistle (Fox 40 or equivalent) is the standard. Carry a backup. The league reimburses up to $25 for your first whistle and lanyard.
/ Required
Black-and-white stripes.
Standard official's jersey, short or long sleeve. Black athletic shorts or pants. Black socks. Black athletic shoes. The league sells branded jerseys at cost on Friday nights.
/ Required
Yellow flag.
A small weighted penalty flag, carried in your pocket or on your belt. The league supplies one in your starter kit.
/ Recommended
Game timer or watch.
Most fields run a visible game clock, but having a stopwatch on your wrist is the pro move. Especially useful for playoff Friday with 8-minute quarters back-to-back.
/ Recommended
Bean bag for spotting.
Useful at the line of scrimmage and on dead-ball spots. Senior refs carry one; rookies can borrow for their first few games.
/ Provided
Rulebook + signal sheet.
The current South OC FNL rulebook and the one-page signal cheat sheet are emailed to every ref before opening Friday and are pinned on the FAQ page.
